Arts-based approaches for inclusive participation

King’s College London, in collaboration with Lancaster University, led a scoping review exploring the transformative potential of arts-based methods in fostering inclusive participation within policymaking. This review, conducted as part of Work Package 3 of the INSPIRE project involved researchers Susana Higueras Carrillo and Marta Wojciechowska (King's College London), Temidayo Eseonu (Lancaster University), Sonia Bussu and Dena Arya (University of Birmingham), and João Amorim, Mariana Rosa, and Roberto Falanga (University of Lisbon). It encompassed diverse projects across various sectors, highlighting the effectiveness of creative approaches like Photovoice, participatory filmmaking, theatre, and storytelling in amplifying marginalised voices and promoting intersectional equity.
The scoping review examines the rationale, practice, and impact of these methods. It highlights considerations around adaiption to participants' needs, safety and power dynamics among others.
The scoping review identifies significant impacts on individuals, communities, and policy demonstratingt the scope for for arts-based methods to transform democracy.
